William J. Zehner was born on January 27, 1941, in Cincinnati, OH. He received the B.S.E.E. degree from North Carolina State College at Raleigh in 1964.

He was employed by the Coastal Systems Station Dahlgren Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City, FL, except for a short sabbatical at Sonatech, Inc., Santa Barbara, CA. He has designed and built a variety of innovative experimental sonars and related equipment. He has developed a number of computer models for simulation, performance prediction, design, and evaluation of sonar systems, transducers and arrays, image processing, and displays. He has authored over 50 technical papers and reports, holds five patents, and has eight others pending. Before his retirement in 1994, he was the Senior Design Engineer for the High Area Rate Reconnaissance Sonar System.

He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America and Eta Kappa Nu.
