John R. Buck received the S.B. degrees in electrical engineering and English literature from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, in 1989, and the S.M., E.E., and Ph.D. degrees from the MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program in oceanographic and electrical engineering in 1991, 1992, and 1996, respectively.
In 1996, he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (UMD), where he is currently an Assistant Professor and is affiliated with the UMD Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST). Since 1996, he has been a Guest Investigator in the Marine Mammal Bioacoustics Group at WHOI. His research interests include signal processing, underwater acoustics, and marine mammal bioacoustics. He is coauthor of the textbook Computer Explorations in Signals and Systems Using Matlab (TM) (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1997).
Dr. Buck is a member of the Acoustical Society of America. He received MIT's Goodwin Medal for "conspicuously effective teaching" in 1994. In 1996, he was awarded a fellowship to the Collegium Summer Institute on Faith and Intellectual Life. He is a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa.
