N. Ross Chapman received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of British Columbia in 1975.

From 1975 to 1995, he was a member of the Ocean Acoustics Group at the Defence Research Establishment Pacific in Victoria, and was group leader from 1990. Currently, he is Senior Chair in Ocean Acoustics at the University of Victoria, where he is establishing a new program in Ocean Acoustics. His interests are in the investigation of the interaction of sound with the ocean bottom, acoustic propagation modeling and development of inversion methods for estimating ocean bottom properties using acoustic field data.
