Laurent Kopp was born in 1951 in Rouen, France. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France, in 1974 and from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications in 1976.
He worked for Schlumberger Overseas in 1976-1978 and joined Thomson CSF at the end of 1978. From 1978 to 1995, he was with the Underwater Acoustic Department, Thomson Marconi Sonar in Sophia-Antipolis, involved in Signal & Information Processing. In mid-1995, he joined the Acoustic Component Division, Thomson Microsonics, where he is in charge of the SAW filters designer group. His field of interest includes adaptive array processing, information theory, communication systems, and SAW filter design.
