John L. Spiesberger was born in Jackson, MI, on November 14, 1953. He received the A.B. degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975 and the Ph.D. degree in oceanography from the University of California at San Diego in 1980.
From 1982 to 1992, he conducted research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, and thereafter joined the Department of Meteorology at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, with a joint appointment at the Applied Research Laboratory. He has contributed to the fields of underwater acoustics, physical oceanography, inverse theory, signal processing, and bioacoustics.
