James V. Candy (SM'94) received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, and the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1972 and 1976, respectively.

He is the Director of the Center for Advanced Signal and Image Sciences at the University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as well as the Staff Scientist for the Imaging and Detection Program, Laser Program. He received a commission in the USAF in 1967 and was a Systems Engineer/Test Director from 1967-1971. He has been a Research Engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 1976. He has held various positions, including that of Project Engineer for Signal Processing and Thrust Area Leader for Signal and Control Engineering. He was on special assignment at the NATO SACLANT ASW Research Center, La Spezia, Italy, and he was on sabbatical leave from Lawrence Livermore at Ecole Superieure D'Electricite, Laboratoire des Signaux et Systems, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. He was an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Santa Clara, Santa Clara, CA, and is currently a Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley Extension. He is the author of two texts, Signal Processing: The Model-Based Approach (McGraw-Hill, 1986) and Signal Processing: The Modern Approach (McGraw-Hill, 1988). His research interests include estimation, identification, spatial estimation, signal and image processing, sonar signal processing, tomography, and biomedical applications.

Dr. Candy is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. He is a Registered Control System Engineer in the state of California and is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Phi Kappa Phi.
