Ralph Marrett received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics in 1976.He subsequently joined the underwater acoustics group at the Defence Scientific Establishment in Auckland, New Zealand. His interests have included the measurement and modeling of ambient noise fields rathe ocean, and the development of signal-processing techniques. He is at present on an exchange posting at the Admiralty Research Laboratory in the UK.
