Paul J. Bushong was born in Fort Wayne, IN, in 1958. He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1981 from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. He served on the USS Memphis (SSN 691) until his admission into the Joint Masters Program in ocean engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, in 1985 under the Navy's masters degree scholarship program. He received the Ocean Engineer and masters degree in this program in 1987.

He is presently serving as the Engineer on the USS Omaha. His research interests are in signal processing, acoustics, and acoustic tomography.
