Marie-Edith Bouhier received the Engineering Diploma from Iastitut de Chimie et de Physique Industrielles (I.C.P.I. de Lyon) in 1983 and the Ph.D. degree from Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 1986.

She worked for one year as a research engineer at I.C.P.I., Lyon, on synthetic aperture sonar. She moved in 1988 to Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la MER (IFREMER), Toulon, France, where she is in charge of signal processing for underwater acoustics systems.
