Werner R. Alpers was born on August 26, 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. In 1962, he received the Dipl.-Phys. degree from the University of Hamburg in 1964, the M.S. degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1964, and the Ph.D. degree (Dr. rer.nat.) in theoretical physics (elementary particle physics) from the University of Hamburg in 1967. From 1968 to 1970, he worked in space physics at the European Space Research Institute in Frascati, Italy, and from 1970 to 1973 at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, working on radio oceanographic research problems. From 1985 to 1989, he was a Professor in the Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bremen. Since October 1989, he has been a Full Professor of Physical Oceanography at the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Hamburg. His current research activities are focused on microwave remote sensing of the ocean by using laboratory, airborne, and spaceborne sensors.
