Alberto Malinverno was born in Milano, Italy, on December 29, 1957. He received the "Laurea" in geological sciences from the University of Milano in 1981. His thesis concerned the interpretation of a large database of seismic reflection profiles in the Tyrrhenian Sea. He earned the Ph.D. degree in geological sciences from Columbia University, New York, in 1989, presenting a thesis entitled "Statistical Studies of Seafloor Geomorphology."

Since then he has been employed at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, NY, as a Postdoctoral Scientist. His research interests include statistical modeling of subaqueous and subaerial relief-forming processes, studies of the process of creation of oceanic litosphere at mid-ocean ridges, and the recent geological evolution of the Mediterranean area.

Dr. Malinverno is a member of the American Geophysical Union and the Sigma Xi Scientific Society.
