Manell E. Zakharia (M'85) was born in 1955 in Beirut. He received the Electrical Engineering Diploma from Institut de Chimie et Physique Industrielles (ICPI)Lyon, Lyon, France, in 1979 and the DEA and Ph.D. degree in acoustics from Université d'Aix-Marseille, France, in 1982.
Since he graduated, he has been in charge of teaching signal processing and underwater acoustics at ICPI Lyon. Since 1991, he has been head of the "Laboratoire d'Acoustique, Systèmes, Signaux et SOnar (LISA/LASSSO) at CPE Lyon. His research work and interest are related to wide-band underwater systems: bottom imaging and characterization, bottom echo analysis, target recognition, and low-frequency and shallow-water propagation. From 1992 up to 1996, he was the President of the French Acoustical Society (SFA, Société Française d'Acoustique). In 1996, he was elected Managing Director of the European Acoustics Association, gathering 24 National Acoustical Societies in Europe with more than 8600 members.
Dr. Zakharia was the Chairman of the first "French Conference on Acoustics", 1990. Since that time he has been a member of the scientific committee of several conferences: French Conference on Acoustics, European Conference on Underwater Acoustics, IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. He is a member of several professional societies including IEE, SEE, ASA.
