Naomi Kato (A'90) received the B. Eng., M. Eng., and D. Eng. degrees in naval architecture from the University of Tokyo in 1974, 1976, and 1980, respectively.

He is currently a Professor in the Department of Marine Design and Engineering, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University, Shizuoka, Japan. His research interests include hydrodynamics and control of underwater vehicles, especially autonomous underwater vehicles, and aqua-bioengineering to investigate mechanisms of motion, sensors, actuators, and autonomous systems of aquatic animals. He contributed to the development of the practical AUV ``Aqua Explorer 2'' for inspection of underwater telecommunication cables in the field of the design of the configuration and the algorithm for the guidance and control. He organized the Research Group of Aqua Bio-Mechanisms in Japan in 1997, cooperating with Japanese researchers to discuss the problems of aqua-biomechanisms.
