Loren W. Nolte (S'56-M'57) received the B.S.E.E. degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering in 1965 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

After a year of postdoctoral research in signal detection at the University of Michigan, he joined the faculty at Duke University, Durham, NC, in 1966 as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering. In 1969-70 he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he taught courses in communications and signal detection theory. In 1974-75 he was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Center for Bionengineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1972 he became Professor of electrical engineering and biomedical engineering at Duke University, his current position. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of signal detection and estimation, ocean acoustics signal processing, and statistical signal processing and its applications in biomedical engineering and image processing.

Dr. Nolte served as Associate Editor for Underwater Acoustics Signal Processing for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ACOUSTICS, SPEECH AND SIGNAL PROCESSING during the period 1980-85 and has served on its Technical Committee for Underwater Acoustic Signal Processing.
