RADM William C. Miller (M'71) is a 1962 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University.He has been a ship commander, and has had assignments on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, the faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy, served as Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. (Shipbuilding & Logistics), served on the staff of Office of Naval Technology and was commanding officer of the Naval Research Laboratory. He has been Director, Undersea and Strategic Warfare and Nuclear Energy Development Division in the Office of The Chief of Naval Operations, and Deputy Director for Research and Development Requirements, Test and Evaluation within the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He is currently the Chief of Naval Research. In this capacity he manages the R & D organizations responsible for the basic research (Office of Naval Research), exploratory development (Office of Naval Technology), and advanced technology (Office of Advanced Technology) programs of the Navy. He also exercises policy oversight for the Navy's laboratories and R & D centers.
