James F. Lynch (M'96) was bom in Jersey City, NJ, on June 3, 1950. He received the B.S. degree in physics magna cum laude from the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, in 1972 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. He remained at the University of Texas at Austin as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant for the Department of Physics from 1972 to 1978, then served as a Research Scientist Associate at the Applied Research Laboratory from 1978 to 1981. In 1982, he became a Member of the Scientific Staff in the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, and has achieved the rank of Senior Scientist. He has been working in underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography since 1978. His specialties are acoustic tomography, shallow-water acoustics, bottom boundary layer studies, and coastal sediment transport. Dr. Lynch is a member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) (elected fellow in 1996) and has served on several committees, including the ASA Committee on Acoustical
