Hiroyasu Momma received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Keio University in 1972.

He joined the Japan Marine Science & Technology Center (JAMSTEC) in 1972. He has currently worked as Research Supervisor in Ocean Engineering Department at Research Supervisor in Ocean Engineering Department. He was involved in developing a deep-tow system at JAMSTEC between 1973 and 1993. He has been a Chief Scientist in the deep-tow cruises at JAMSTEC since 1981. He established a real-time and comprehensive deep seafloor monitoring system with a cable off Hatsushima Island, central Japan, in 1993. His interests include deep ocean engineering, especially in developing long-term seafloor observatories.
