Giorgio Tacconi was born in Florence, Italy, and in 1957 received the Doctoral degree in physics from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy. He wrote his doctoral dissertation while at the Center for Microwave Physics, National Research Council (CNR), Florence, Italy.After graduation, he worked at the Research Institute for Electromagnetic Waves (IROECNR), Florence, Italy, from 1955 to 1959, at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland, from 1962 to 1964, and at SACLANT ASW Research Center, La Spezia, Italy, from 1959 to 1962 and from 1964 to 1970. At present, he holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Biophysics and Electronic Engineering (DIBE) of the University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy. Since 1969, he has taught Electroacoustics and Information Theory there. As a part-time assignment, he has taught Underwater Sensor Systems at the Hydrographic Institute of the Italian Navy, Genoa, Italy, from 1960 to 1965, and at the Military Naval Academy, Leghorn, Italy, from 1980 to 1984. His principal research interests are underwater propagation of acoustic/electromagnetic waves, the use of these waves in underwater communications, measurement of ELF noise in various media (he was the first to detect the Shumann resonances at the sea bottom, in the band 2 to 32 Hz), characterization of underwater transmission channels, underwater signal processing, etc. He has published numerous technical papers on the results of his research, and was the Editor, in 1977, of two volumes entitled Aspects of Signal Processing, with Emphasis on Underwater Acoustics, published by Reidel Publishing Company, Dordrecht, Holland. His current research is on ELF receiving systems (for use at the sea surface and at the sea bottom), and on acoustic/electromagnetic waves propagation and scattering, in the ocean. Since 1971, he has been a Scientific Advisor to the Italian Navy.
