Thomas M. (Tim) Dauphinee (SM'73) received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, in 1950.He has been with the Division of Physics of the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, ON, since 1945 as Research Officer, then as Head of the Heat and Thermometry section, and, since his retirement, as a Consultant. His chief area of interest has been instrumentation for physical measurements, first in solid state, then in temperature and temperature standards, and, more recently, in oceanography. Recent work has included the design and testing of in situ STD equipment and laboratory salinometers (which are now manufactured products), seawater studies leading to formation of the new Practical Salinity Scale 1978, and instrumentation for in situ counting of plankton and for remote barometric pressure measurements.
Dr. Dauphinee was the winner of the 1978 Morris E. Leeds Award (IEEE) for "the application of physical principles to instrumentation and measurements,'' and holds a number of published papers and patents in the instrumentation field. He is a member of the IEEE Council on Oceanic Engineering, and is an Associate Editor of the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING. On the international scene, he is an Advisor to the UNESCO-SCOR-ICES-IAPSO Joint Panel on Oceanographic Tables and Standards and a member of SCOR WG 77 on Evaluation of CTD data.
