Michael L. Somers received the B.Sc. degree in physics from Oxford University, U.K., in 1960.
In the same year, he joined the then National Institute of Oceanography (subsequently IOSDL and now relocated to the Southampton Oceanography Centre). He specialized in underwater acoustic systems, being involved from the start with GLORIA Mk I, developing the receivers and recording systems. In 1975, he assumed direction of the project for the development of GLORIA Mk II. He has been responsible for all subsequent modifications and upgrades, including swath bathymetry. He has also been responsible for the design of several other acoustic instrumentation systems in longterm use by IOSDL scientists. He left the SOC in September 1995 and now works as a consultant in marine acoustic systems in association with Geotek.
