Mario D. Grossi (M'59-SM'62) was born in Italy and received the Dr. Eng. degree (cum laude) from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 1948. After graduation, he did postdoctoral work at the Electromagnetic Waves Research Institute (IROE-CNR), Florence, Italy, obtaining the diploma in microwave physics in 1949.From 1949 to 1958, he worked for Marconi Italiana, Genoa, Italy, as an Electronic Design Supervisor. As a part-time assignment, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Telecommunications Institute of the University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy. In 1958, he moved to the United States, and he has worked since that time for Raytheon Company, Portsmouth, RI. Concurrently, for twenty-six years, he has also held a part-time position at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, MA. He has been involved in a variety of R&D programs, most recently in the area of propagation of radio waves, remote sensing by electromagnetic waves, ELF/ULF system engineering, space-science instrumentation, underwater instrumentation, etc.
Dr. Grossi is an associate fellow of AIAA and a member of APTS. He has published extensively on topics of radio physics and radio engineering.
