Robert L. Wernli (M'97) was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1946. He received the B.S.M.E. degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1973 and the M.S. degree in engineering design from San Diego State University, San Diego, CA, in 1985.
In 1973, he joined the Naval Undersea Center, San Diego. He is currently a Program Manager and Senior Staff Member of the Ocean Systems Division at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego. As an Engineer at the Navy laboratory, he has been actively involved in the development of remotely operated vehicle and work systems technology for naval applications for over 25 years. He holds several patents and is widely published internationally. International activities include his role as a member of the US-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UJNR), where he is actively involved in the Marine Facilities Panel, which addresses undersea vehicle technology.
Mr. Wernli is a member of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a fellow of the Marine Technology Society (MTS). He has been active in the international conference activities of both MTS and IEEE. As an MTS member, he initiated and chaired 10 ROV Converences from 1983 to 1992 while Chairman of the society's ROV Committee. He was also Chairman of the Oceans'95 MTS/IEEE Conference in San Diego. He received the Department of the Navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the MTS Special Commendation and Award.
