David R. Topham received the degree of Ph.D. from Loughborough University, England, in 1970.

He joined the British aerospace industry in 1959 as a High-Speed Aerodynamicist and moved to the English Electric Company in 1965 to undertake research on high power circuit breakers. After completing a Post Doctoral post at Oxford University in 1973 he held the position of Assistant Visiting Professor in electrical engineering at the University of Alberta. In 1975 he joined the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, B.C., Canada, where he worked on pollution problems arising from sub-sea oilwell blowouts and general problems of Arctic oceanography. His current research concerns the hydrodynamic drag of heavily ridged seaice.

Dr. Topham was awarded the 1974 Snell Premium Prize by the I.E.E (London) for research in circuit-breaker electric arc interruption and has published papers on a wide range of topics, including supersonic heat transfer, high power electric arcs, combustion ignition, arctic oceanography, and instrumentation.
