P. Edgar An received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, in 1988 and 1991, respectively.
He currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, working on basic/applied research and development for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). From 1991 through 1994, he was a Research Fellow in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Southampton University, U.K., working on the European Prometheus Project (predecessor of IVHS). His major research interests include AUV modeling and simulation, multisensor data fusion algorithms for AUV navigation, command and control issues for intelligent autonomous vehicles, nonlinear modeling and control using neural networks and fuzzy-logic methodologies, and algorithmic development for high-dimensional modeling with noisy and correlated data. He has published 30 journal and conference papers in these areas.
Dr. An is a member of Space Automation and Robotics Technical Committee (SARTC), AIAA (1995-1997), Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, International Neural Network Society, and is a reviewer for IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SYSTEMS, MAN, AND CYBERNETICS, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON FUZZY SYSTEMS, International Journal of Systems Science Robotics, and Automation conference, and Automatica.
Samuel M. Smith received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in 1991.
He is currently an Associate Professor of Ocean Engineering, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, and Director of the Advanced Marine Systems Laboratory. His general areas of interests include intelligent control systems, autonomous robotics, intelligent distributed control and sensing systems, automated reasoning, and signal processing. Specific areas of expertise are in fuzzy-logic control and decision making. His current research is developing sensing, command, and control systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, along with network control systems for shipboard automation.
