Jürgen Sündermann received the degree in math ematics from the University of Münster, Germany in 1962 and the doctor's degree and habilitation in oceanography from the University of Hamburg in 1966 and 1971, respectively.

From 1971 to 1978, he was Professor at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Hannover. From 1978 to 1989, he led the Institute of Oceanography, University of Hamburg, in the position of a Managing Director. He is now the Director of the Centre of Marine and Climate Research at the University of Hamburg and Honorary Professor at the Ocean University of Qingdao, P. R China.
