Jay A. Farrell (S'86-M'89) received B.S. degrees in physics and electrical engineering from Iowa State University in 1986 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1988 and 1989, respectively.

He joined the technical staff at The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in 1989. Since that time he has been principal investigator on an IR&D project aimed at developing fault detection, fault isolation, and reconfigurable control technology to a point sufficient to support autonomous vehicle operations, and codirected research associated with a National Science Foundation grant and an IR&D project to investigate the incorporation of connectionist learning systems in control architectures. His main area of research investigates the use of adaptation, learning, and artificial intelligence techniques in advanced control systems.

Dr. Farrell is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon. Eta Kappa Nu. Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is also an Associate Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NEURAL NETWORKS.
