Stanley L. Ehrlich (A'53-M'58-SM'64) was born in Newark, NJ, on 7 January 1925, and moved to Providence, RI, the following year. In 1944 he received the Sc.B. degree in engineering and in 1945 the Sc.M. degree in physics, both from Brown University, Providence, RI. He also did postgraduate study from 1945 to 1948 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and from 1951 to 1953 at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.From 1948 to 1953 he was a Physicist at the USN Underwater Sound Laboratory, now the Naval Underwater Systems Center, New London Laboratory, New London, CT. Since 1953 he has been at Raytheon Company's Submarine Signal Division, now at Portsmouth, RI, where he is a Consulting Engineer. His fields of interest include magnetostriction, electrostriction, electroacoustics, design of transducers, development of sonar systems, and normal modes in solids. Of his inventions the most significant is the sonar transducer described in U.S. Patent 3 290 646, called the Multimode Transducer. At least four others of his 12 patents and two of his refereed papers are related to it. Applications of the Multimode Transducer to helicopter dipped sonar systems, sonobuoys, acoustic countermeasures, and towed vehicle-simulators are still current state of the art, over 30 years after the original concept was reduced to practice in 1956 on a budget of $2000. Several others have published patents and papers that reference this work in the U.S.A. and abroad.
Mr. Ehrlich has been a member of the IEEE since 1953, when it was called the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). In addition to the Oceanic Engineering Society (OE), he also belongs to the Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC); the Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing Society (ASSP); and the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IM). He has served on the IEEE (formerly IRE) Committee on Piezoelectric and Ferroelectric Crystals (1954-1966, Vice-Chairman 1962-1966); the Committee on Transducers and Resonators (1966-1980); the Committee on Frequency and Time (1966-1980); as Delegate or Alternate to ANSI Committee S1 (Acoustics) (1971-1982); the Ad Com of the Council on Oceanic Engineering (1981-1982); the Ad Com of the Oceanic Engineering Society (1983-Present); the Technical Committee on Piezomagnetic Technology (Chairman 1984-Present); and with the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC Engineering (Associate Editor 1975-1981; Editor 1982-1987). He has been a member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) since 1949, and was elected a Fellow in 1968. He has served the ASA on the Committee on Regional Chapters (1960-Present, Chairman 1976-1985); the Narragansett Chapter (Organizing Committee Chairman 1964-1965, Chairman 1965-1966, Executive Committee 1966-Present); the Technical Committee on Engineering Acoustics (1966-Present; Chairman 1979-1981); the Technical Council (1979-1981); the Committee on Medals and Awards (1970-1975); the Silver Medal Subcommittee in Engineering Acoustics (1973-1985); the Coordinating Committee on Environmental Acoustics (Regional Coordinator 1976-1985); the Committee for the 95th ASA Meeting in Providence, RI, in 1978 May (General Chairman 1975 1978); the Future Meetings Committee (1978-1979); the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (Associate Editor for Instrumentation and Measurement and for Transduction, 1981-Present); the Editorial Board (1981-Present); the Program Organizing Committees at Atlanta, GA, Ottawa, Ont., Canada, and Cincinnati, OH; and the Executive Council (1986-Present). He has served the American National Standards Institute on Committee S1 (Acoustics) [S1-W44 (Acoustical Reference Quantities) 1965-1982; S1-W53 (Acoustical Terminology) 1974-1982; Individual Expert 1983-Present] and Committee Y10.15 (Letter Symbols for Acoustics) [1975- Present, Chairman 1988-Present], and was the U.S.A. representative to the International Organization for Standardization, TC- 43 (Acoustics), WG-2 (Reference Quantities) [1974-1976]. He is also a member of the American Physical Society, the National Security Industrial Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the New York Academy of Sciences, and an associate member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. He was elected to Sigma Xi, (Associate Member 1944, Member 1980), Sigma Pi Sigma (1952), and Tau Beta Pi (1954). He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in the ASA's Narragansett Chapter (1975), the Freeman Award for Engineering Achievement of the Providence, RI, Engineering Society (1976), an IEEE Centennial Medal (1984), the Distinguished Service Citation of the Acoustical Society of America (1986), and the Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (1987).
