Ronald G. Perkin received the B.A.Sc. degree in engineering physics in 1966 and the M.S. degree in physics in 1970 from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.He worked on various aspects of the oceanography of the Arctic Ocean with the Frozen Sea Research Group and the Division of Ocean Physics at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, B.C. The requirements for highly accurate measurements in the Arctic Ocean lead to his interest in CTD instrumentation and the measurement of salinity. He participated in the work leading to the Practical Salinity Scale (1978) and served as an invited expert on the Joint Panel on Oceanographic Tables and Standards.
He is a member of the American Geophysical Union and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and is active in the Aquatic Resources Committee of the B.C. Science Council.
