Peter H. Wiebe was born on October 2, 1940 in Salinas, CA. He received the B.S. degree in math and zoology in 1962 from Arizona State College in Flagstaff, AZ and the Ph.D. degree in biological oceanography from the University of California, San Diego (SIO), in 1968.

He spent a year as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University at Pacific Grove, CA, in 1968-1969 before becoming a member of the scientific staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA in 1969. He is now a Senior Scientist in the Biology Department. His research has been on the quantitative population ecology of marine zooplankton with primary emphasis on the small-scale distribution and abundance of zooplankton, the transport of organic matter into the deep sea, the biology of cold-core and warm-core Gulf Stream Rings, the zooplankton associated with deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and the determination of zooplankton biomass, abundance, and size by acoustical backscattering. He has been involved in the development of a number of instrument systems. Among these are the Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder, the Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS), the Bioacoustic Sensing Platform And Relay (BIOSPAR-a free-drifting buoy), and two towed body systems, the Greene Bomber and Bio-Optical, Multifrequency Acoustics, and Physical Environmental Recorder (BIOMAPER).

Dr. Wiebe is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (elected Fellow, May 1984) and a member of the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography. He is chairman of the U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank Program's Executive Committee.
