Timothy P. Le Bas received the B.Sc. degree in geology and geophysics from the University of Durham in 1986. He is now working part-time for the Ph.D. degree in thematic information systems from the University of Reading.
He has worked as a Higher Scientific Officer at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, Deacon Laboratory, for nine years, which has now relocated to the Southampton Oceanography Centre. He has been to sea several times and is the computing coordinator for the group. His work has focused on image and data processing of sidescan sonar from the GLORIA vehicle and more recently the TOBI vehicle. His research interests include registration of bathymetric datasets with sidescan sonar, interpretation of sidescan imagery using automatic methods, and quantitative analysis of seabed backscattering.
