Mark C. Benfield was born in Durban, South Africa, on March 23, 1958. He received the B.Sc. degree in biology from the University of Toronto in 1980, the M.Sc. degree in biology from the University of Natal in 1981, and the Ph.D. degree in wildlife and fisheries science from Texas A&M University, College Station, in 1991.
He spent two years teaching undergraduate marine biology and marine ecology at Texas A&M University at Galveston before joining the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, as a Post-Doctoral Investigator in 1993. He is currently a Research Associate in the Coastal Fisheries Institute at Louisiana State University. Baton Rouge. His research has focused on the recruitment and habitat selection of planktonic larvae, predator-prey interactions and the fine-scale distribution of marine zooplankton assemblages.
Dr. Benfield is a member of the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography, the Estuarine Research Federation, the American Association of Fisheries Research Biologists, and Sigma Xi.
