James F, R. Gower received the B.A. degree in natural sciences in 1962, and the Ph.D. degree in radio astronomy in 1966, both from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England.He continued working in radio astronomy at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, from 1967 to 1971. Since then he has worked on the applications of airborne and satellite remote-sensing techniques to oceanography at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, B.C., Canada. He has been a principal investigator on the U.S. GEOS 3 and Seasat oceanographic satellites, and is presently developing an optical imaging spectrometer for ocean spectral reflectance measurements.
Dr. Gower is Chairman of the URSI Inter-Commission Coordinating Group on Remote Sensing.
