Mutsuo Hattori received the B.S. and Dr. Science degrees from Tohoku University in 1962 and 1967, respectively.

From 1969 to 1972 he was a Lecturer at International Christian University and was also a Research Staff Member of the Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. He is currently a Senior Scientist in the Deep Sea Technology Department at Japan Marine Science and Technology Center, Yokosuka, Japan. His interests are in the application of remotely operated vehicles to marine geological research.

Dr. Hattori is a member of the Geological Society of Japan and the Oceanographical Society of Japan.
