Erik C. van Ballegooijen was born on May 18, 1945, in The Hague, The Netherlands. He received the M.Sc. degree in physics in 1973, and the Ph.D. degree in physics in 1978, both from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven.

Since 1979 he has been with the Signal Processing Group of the Physics and Electronics Laboratory of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research in The Hague, The Netherlands. His research interests have been in the areas of quartz crystal microbalances, adaptive signal processing, and passive towed array sonar. He has published papers on quartz crystal microbalances and has contributed to the book Applications of Piezoelectric Quartz Crystal Microbalances (Amsterdam: Elsevier, 1989).
