W. Kendall Melville received the B.Sc. in mathematics in 1966, and the B.E. and M.Eng. Sc. degrees in aeronautical engineering in 1968 and 1970, respectively, from the University of Sydney, and the Ph.D. degree in aeronautics from the University of Southhampton in 1974.Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of New South Wales, he moved to the institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, U.C. San Diego, in 1977. Since 1980 he has been on the faculty of the R.M. Parsons Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include fluid mechanics, air-sea interaction, surface wave stability and breaking, acoustical oceanography, microwave remote sensing, and nonlinear internal waves.
