Melvin W. Dill (M'68) was born in Cameron Co., PA, in 1924. He received the Sc.B. degree in physics from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1949, and the Sc.M. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Brown University, in 1952 and 1955, respectively.He spent two years at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, Pittsburgh, PA, working on electrical equipment noise problems; nine years at M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, MA, serving as the Technical Representative for reentry experiments with the AM RAD radar at White Sands; and five years at AVCO Missile Systems Division, Wilmington, MA, serving as a radar consultant to reentry penetration aids development. Since 1971 he has been a member of the Electromagnetic Effects Department at the Communication Systems Division, GTE Government Systems Corporation, Needam Heights, MA, where he has analyzed the effects of lightning and EMP on the SPRINT Missile System, and several communication systems. Hardening fixes were recommended for these systems. For ELF, he has been responsible for the electrical design of the Michigan horizontal electrode grounds.
