Hideto Mitome was born in Niigata, Japan, on December 20, 1951. He received the B.E., M.E., and D.E. degrees in aeronautical engineering from Nagoya University, Japan, in 1974, 1976, and 1979, respectively.

In 1979 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (MEL), Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Tsukuba, Japan. His work at MEL has been in research associated with the underwater ultrasonic homing system. He is also greatly interested in nonlinear waves in fluids. Since 1983 he has been a Senior Researcher of MEL.
