Michael D. Collins was born in Greenville, PA, in 1958. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1982, the M.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, in 1986, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1988.

Since 1989, he has worked for the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC. During 1985-1989, he worked at the Naval Ocean Resarch and Development Activity, Stennis Space Center, MS (now NRL-SSC) as both a civilian employee and an on-site representative of SYNTEK Engineering and Computer Systems, Inc., Rockville, MD.

Dr. Collins is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the American Geophysical Union.
