Gerard W. M. van Mierlo was born in Arnhem, The Netherlands, on November 23, 1949. He received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the Catholic University of Nijmegen in 1981.From 1974 through 1979 he worked at the Catholic University of Nijmegen on the development of stabilized single-mode frequency doubled dye lasers. In 1979 he joined the Signal Processing Group of the Physics and Electronics Laboratory of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research in The Hague, The Netherlands, to work on MTI radar. Since 1962 his primary research interests have been in the field of passive towed array sonar.
Dr. van Mierlo is a member of the Board of the Netherlands Electronics and Radio Society (NERG).
