Ross F. Barrett (M'90) was horn in Fremantle, Western Australia, on August 19, 1942. He received the B.Se. (Honours) degree in physics in 1964 and the Ph.D. degree in physics in 1969, both from the University of Western Australia.He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Frankfurt, Germany ( 1969-1972), a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne (1972-1974), a Research Fellow at the Australian National University, Canberra (1974-1978), and a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Western Australia (1978 1982). Until this period, his primary research interests were in theoretical and experimental nuclear physics. In 1982, he joined the staff of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Salisbury, South Australia, where he is presently a Senior Principal Research Scientist and Research Leader in Sonar Technology and Processing.
