Kourosh Koushan was born in Iran in 1964. He gained his bachelor degree at the Marine Engineering College, India in 1988. He then went on to complete a postgraduate Diplom-Ingenieur (similar to M.Sc.) (1992) and his doctorate (1997) in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, specialising in Ship Hydrodynamics, at Technische Universität Berlin. During the course of his studies in Berlin, he worked at the university as a Project Engineer and Assistant Lecturer. He took on a position as Project Leader at Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK) in June 1997 on completing his studies.
