Klaus-Werner Gurgel (M'94) received the diploma in electrical engineering from the University of Hannover, Germany in 1980 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Hamburg (UH), Hamburg, Germany, in 1993.
From 1980 to 1985, he was responsible for the technical development and deployment of UH's CODAR system during numerous experiments. In 1985, he started working on a shipborne version of the CODAR which was completed in 1993. In 1996, he developed the new high-frequency radar WERA (WEllen RAdar) within the EU-funded project SCAWVEX (Surface Current And Wave Variability Experiment).
