Robert Cohen was born in Indianapolis, IN. He received the B.S. degree in chemistry from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, in 1947, following two years of U.S. Navy service. He pursued graduate work in physics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, (M.S., 1948) and at Purdue University, Lafayette, IN, and then received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1956.His first career was in the field of remote sensing of plasma phenomena in the ionosphere, utilizing radio and radar techniques. This research was conducted in Colorado and South America for the National Bureau of Standards and later NOAA. After becoming concerned about the energy problem in the early 1970's, he joined the federal energy development program in Washington, DC, in 1973. There he initiated the federal R&D program in ocean energy. He joined the private sector in 1981, and presently is Manager, Advanced Ocean Products Development, with Giannotti & Associates, Inc., Annapolis, MD.
In 1980 Dr. Cohen was recognized for his contributions to ocean energy development by receiving the Compass Distinguished Achievement Award of the Marine Technology Society. He is a member of the IEEE Energy Committee.
