Norman H. Field was born in Worthing, England, on April 17, 1930. He attended Southampton University, where he studied chemistry, physics, and mathematics.From 1950 to 1978 he worked at the Admiralty Research Laboratory in Teddington, England. During this period he gained wide experience in the design and fitting of underwater sonars, and has contributed to research programs in bottom-laid, hull-mounted, and towed sonars. In 1978 he moved to the Admiralty Research Establishment, Portland, Dorset, where he currently works as an Advisor and Consultant to naval development and procurement projects.
