Heinz-Hermann Essen received the diploma in physics and the Ph.D. degree in geophysics from the University of Hamburg (UH), Hamburg, Germany, in 1969 and 1976, respectively.
From 1969 until 1980, he was Scientist at the UH Geophysical Institute and worked in the fields of seismic and underwater acoustics. In 1981, he joined the UH Institute of Oceanography and started his work on high-frequency (HF) remote sensing of the ocean. From 1991 until 1996, he was responsible for satellite remote sensing activities at the Saclant Undersea Research Center, La Spezia, Italy. His present research interests are in HF remote sensing, microwave wind scatterometry, and microseisms.
