Richard I. Joseph was born in Brooklyn, NY, on May 25, 1936. He received the B.S. degree from the City College of the City University of New York in 1957 and the Ph.D. degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, in 1962, both in physics.From 1961 to 1966 he was a Senior Scientist with the Research Division of the Raytheon Company, Waltham, MA. Since 1966, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, where he is currently the Jacob Suter Jammer Professor of Electrical Engineering. During 1972, he was a Visiting Professor of Physics at the Kings College, University of London, England, on a Guggenheim Fellowship. His research interests include electromagnetic theory, oceanography, statistical mechanics, and the theory of solitons and nonlinear evolution equations.
Dr. Joseph is a Fellow of the APS.
