Louis L. Whitcomb (S'87-M'87) received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1984 and 1992, respectively.
From 1984 to 1986, he was an R&D Engineer with the GMFanuc Robotics Corporation. In 1993, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. In 1994, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, on the dynamics and control of underwater robot vehicles. He is co-developer of the control systems for the Jason and Argo II underwater vehicles and and has gone to sea in numerous oceanographic expeditions to deploy new underwater robot systems. His research focuses on the dynamics and control of mechanical things. He is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.
Dr. Whitcomb received a 1996 Career Award from the National Science Foundation and a 1997 Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research.
