John A. McGregor received the B.Sc. (hons.) degree, the M.Sc. degree in physics, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1977, 1979, and 1986, respectively.

From 1985 to 1988, he was a Scientist at the Physics and Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, where he worked on the development of microwave radar techniques for remote sensing of the ocean surface and atmosphere. From 1988 to 1989, he worked as a Research Fellow in the Department of Physics, James Cook University, Townsville, Australia, where he was involved in the development of HF radar ocean surface remote sensing techniques. Presently, he is a Scientist with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Wellington, New Zealand. His interests include radar remote sensing, radar systems engineering, satellite remote sensing of precipitation, sea surface temperature and cloud fields, physical oceanography of coastal upwelling regions, atmospheric trace gas instrumentation, and applications of digital signal processing to radar and seismic reflection studies.
