John Fawcett was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1957. He received the B.Sc. degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Victoria in lg79 and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1983.

In 1983-1984 he was a postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematics at Stanford University, and since September 1984 he has been working in the Ocean Acoustics Group at the Defence Research Establishment Pacific. He was an exchange scientist with Maritime Systems Division, DSTO Salisbury, South Australia from January 1991 to June 1992. His main research interests lie in the fields of estimation theory and wave propagation.
