Ronald S. Peterson received the Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech., Blacksburg, VA, in 1979.

He began his professional career in 1976 as a Naval Architect with the Naval Coastal Systems Center (NCSC), Panama City, FL. His work at NCSC has been in design, analysis, research, and testing associated with the hydrodynamic characteristics of underwater vehicles. His two primary technical specialties have been design and simulation of propulsion systems, and investigation of the propeller acoustic wake. In 1983 he became Head of the Hydromechanics Branch of NCSC. Since his arrival at NCSC in 1976, he has received one patent, published three scientific papers, and authored 17 NCSC reports related to underwater vehicle hydrodynamics.
